Image: Istock) - The human genome is like a puzzle - but a difficult one to solve: This puzzle has more than three billion pieces. And as if that were not challenging enough, the puzzle is made even more confusing by similar pieces as well as patterns that repeat themselves. Science is also faced with this problem, because about one third of the genome consists of repeating - repetitive - genes. In the international consortium T2T , which has now completely decoded the human genome for the first time in twenty years, a working group led by Prof. Wojciech Makalowski of the Westphalian Wilhelms University (WWU) Münster devoted itself to the repetitive regions - and discovered numerous new repetitive genes and variants. The results have now been published in the journal Science. Everyone has a "genetic fingerprint" - because every genome is unique.
