New discovery at the IOR on mechanisms leading to the spread of metastases
Prostate cancer research is making further progress with a recent discovery of the Prostate Cancer Biology laboratory at the Institute of Oncology Research (IOR, affiliated to the Universitą della Svizzera Italiana). A study led by Dr  Giuseppina Carbone has revealed that micro-RNA fragments, released into the body by prostate cancer cells through microscopic vesicles called exosomes, lead to the formation of metastases.

Effectiveness of protective measures in hospitals in Ticino
A study performed in Ticino in Spring 2020, on data of SARS-CoV-2 serological tests run on healthcare workers, shows that COVID-19 antibodies are detectable in up to 10% of the participants. Such a result are comparable with the ones of the Corona Immunitas study conducted on the Ticino population. More importantly, it shows that healthcare workers with exposure to COVID-19 patients have only a slightly higher absolute risk of seropositivity than those without, suggesting that the use of protective measures in hospitals aiming at reducing nosocomial viral transmission are effective.

A data-driven approach to identify risk profiles and protective drugs in COVID-19
A study performed in Ticino between Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale (EOC), USI Universitą della Svizzera italiana and Universitą Vita-Salute San Raffaele (UniSR, Milan, Italy) has shown how drugs against hypertension can reduce by more than 60% the risk of mortality in COVID-19 patients. The multidisciplinary study concerned 576 patients admitted to the EOC during the first wave of the epidemic, and was published in the prestigious journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

After the announcement, in May, of the first results of serological tests carried out on healthcare personnel in Ticino [ www.usi.ch/en/feeds/13622 ], significant data on the antibody response to SARS-CoV-2 is now available, thanks to the analysis carried out - among others - by the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB, affiliated to USI) and Humabs BioMed (subsidiary of Vir Biotechnology), in close collaboration with hospitals and COVID-19 centers in Ticino (Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale EOC and Clinica Luganese Moncucco).

Claudia Magrin and Martina Sola are two researchers in neuroscience and PhD students at USI. IOR researchers suggest that androgen-deprivation treatments for prostate cancer could protect men from COVID-19
The so-called "androgen-deprivation" treatments used in prostate cancer therapy may have a protective effect against COVID-19. A study conducted by the Istitute of Oncology Research (IOR, affiliated to USI) based on health data obtained from the Veneto region in Italy has observed a lower risk of developing the coronavirus disease for men subject to this type of therapy.
