Obstacle avoidance by echolocating bats: it might be simpler than it sounds
Bats compare the volume of an echo in both left and right ears then turn away from the side receiving the loudest echo in order to avoid obstacles, new research from the University of Bristol, published today in PLOS Computational Biology, has found. Echolocating bats can fly through complex environments in complete darkness, swiftly and apparently effortless avoiding obstacles, but it is unclear exactly how they perform this feat.

Yale University scientists have answered a 40-year-old question about Arctic ice thickness by treating the ice floes of the frozen seas like colliding molecules in a fluid or gas. Although today's highly precise satellites do a fine job of measuring the area of sea ice, measuring the volume has always been a tricky business.

Untangling the mechanics of knots
Got rope? Then try this experiment: Cross both ends, left over right, then bring the left end under and out, as if tying a pair of shoelaces. If you repeat this sequence, you get what's called a "granny" knot. If, instead, you cross both ends again, this time right over left, you've created a sturdier "reef" knot.

Mathematicians: Human societies think fast and slow in cycles
As humans have evolved, so has our capacity to think rationally and use resources wisely - right? Not necessarily. According to Cornell research, careful, deliberate decision-making is in constant competition with the more knee-jerk type of behavior. Cornell mathematicians have developed a theoretical model to study the dynamics between "thinking fast and slow" - the distinction between human cognitive processing that is quick and intuitive, versus slow and rational.

How do networks shape the spread of disease and gossip?
A new approach to exploring the spread of contagious diseases or the latest celebrity gossip has been tested using London's street and underground networks. Results from the new approach could help to predict when a contagion will spread through space as a simple wave (as in the Black Death) and when long-range connections, such as air travel, enable it to seemingly jump over long distances and emerge in locations far from an initial outbreak.
