Professor Yiu-Wing Mai has been elected to one of the world’s leading engineering bodies.
The University of Sydney's Professor Yiu-Wing Mai has been elected as an international fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering in recognition of his groundbreaking work in the field of advanced materials and fracture mechanics. Professor Mai is a member of the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering in the University's Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies. His research has contributed to the development of asbestos-free cements, testing protocols and improved manufacturing processes. He was one of just six experts elected as an international fellow by the Royal Academy of Engineering at its annual meeting in London this week. Professor Mai said: "I am very happy to be elected to the Royal Academy of Engineering and I share this honour with my past and present colleagues, research fellows and graduate students. "It is particularly pleasing that our research on advanced materials and fracture mechanics and its influence in Australia and overseas is internationally recognised." Professor Mai studied in Hong Kong before joining the University of Sydney as a lecturer in 1976. Since then he has held numerous positions, including Associate Dean (Research and Development) of Engineering, Pro-Dean of Engineering, and Director of the Graduate School of Engineering.
