Number of Aussies not actively looking for work on the rise
Number of Aussies not actively looking for work on the rise
New data shows there are signs of improvement in labour market outcomes between May and late June, though hours worked are still below pre-COVID levels. But the number of Australians actively looking for work has declined, according to the researchers. The analysis builds on a first-of-its kind longitudinal study of people's activities and wellbeing before and after the COVID-19 crisis.

Test confirms no trace of coronavirus in ACT sewage
A comprehensive testing program has found no traces of SARS-CoV-2 in Canberra's sewage system. The testing program, carried out by experts from ANU, examined Canberra's sewage water for traces of the coronavirus which causes COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2. Testing sewage is a rapid and inexpensive way of tracking the coronavirus and potential community transmission.

Bugs resort to several colours to protect themselves
Bugs resort to several colours to protect themselves
New research has revealed for the first time that shield bugs use a variety of colours throughout their lives to avoid predators. Shield bugs are often bright, colourful insects that use colours to warn of their distastefulness to predators. The paper,  published in The Royal Society , found that it is impossible to predict how an adult bug will look based on their colour when young.

Number of Australians facing housing stress doubles
The number of Australians who couldn't pay their rent or mortgage on time has more than doubled due to COVID-19, new data from The Australian National University (ANU) shows. The survey of more than 3,200 people shows the proportion of Australians not being able to meet their regular housing costs jumped from 6.9 per cent in April to 15.1 per cent in May.

Black hole swallows much smaller mysterious object
Black hole swallows much smaller mysterious object
A black hole around 23 times the size of the Sun has swallowed a mysterious, much smaller astrophysical object, according to new research announced today by the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave observatories, including scientists from The Australian National University (ANU). The gravitational waves from this surprising event were detected by the LIGO and Virgo detectors on 14 August 2019 with the signal coming from a distance of around 800 million light years.

Shows how Australia's burrowing frogs handle the heat
Shows how Australia’s burrowing frogs handle the heat
Researchers have shown how the unique genetic make-up of a group of Australian frogs could be the key to their survival, allowing them to better withstand our harsh climate. The team of biologists from The Australian National University (ANU), Ghent University in Belgium and the South Australian Museum studied a group of nine species of burrowing frogs, Neobatrachus .

Aussies back COVID cure cash splash to help fix economy
Australians think increasing spending on finding a vaccine or treatment for COVID-19 is the best way to help our economy during the current crisis, a new study has found. The study, led by The Australian National University (ANU), examined more than 3,200 Australians' views about the Government's COVID-19 policies and which ones they thought would best solve the nation's economic woes.

Records reveal new trends in Australian temperature extremes
Researchers have developed Australia's longest daily temperature record, identifying a decrease in cold extremes and an increase in heatwaves since 1838. Lead researcher Dr Joelle Gergis from The Australian National University (ANU) says the study examined daily records from around Adelaide.  "We've been able to place recently observed daily temperature extremes in a longer context by using historical weather records from the Adelaide region," she said.    "Our analysis shows that snow was once a regular feature of southern Australian climate.

Bacteria breakthrough could lead to new biomaterials
Physicists at The Australian National University (ANU) have found a way to manipulate the growth of bacterial biofilms - one of the most abundant forms of life on earth. The breakthrough could help improve how we deal with chronic infections and antibiotic resistance, as well as the food we eat and the clothes we wear.
