In this nematode species, males are needed for reproduction, but not because of their genes
Publication from LBMC, IBENS and Isyeb in Science on March 15, 2019. In the Mesorhabditis belari roundworm, the sole purpose of males is to help females produce clones of themselves. This unique form of reproduction was recently described by researchers from the CNRS, l'ENS de Lyon, l'Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, and the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in an article published on 15 March 2019 .

Turbocharged supercapacitors from new ionic liquids
Publication by Laboratoire de chimie, , on August 2019. A new article describes the discovery of a new class of electrolytes, which can improve energy storage efficiency in supercapacitors. A team of scientists from US, France, UK and Australia has worked out a way to improve energy storage devices called supercapacitors, by designing a new class of ionic liquids based on common, non-toxic chemicals.

Evolution: a new mechanism of genome size variation linked to the size of organisms discovered in tunicates
Publication from the IGFL in Current Biology on April 1st, 2019. The genome, which corresponds to the whole DNA content of a cell and is characteristic of an organism, can present big variations in size between species. If this size does not correlate with organismal "complexity", it is not clearly established yet if bigger or smaller genomes could be adaptive.

Deciphering the link between skin allergies and the gut microbiota
Over the last few years, scientists have discovered connections between gut microbiota imbalances and various diseases. Now, in a study using mice, biologists from the CNRS, INSERM, and Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University -together with colleagues from the Institut Pasteur de Lille and the NIH (USA)- have revealed a surprising relationship between a viral detection system, the composition of the gut microbiota, and the development of skin allergies.

Evidence for the Extensive Conservation of Mechanisms of Ovule Integument Development Since the Most Recent Common Ancestor of Living Angiosperms
Abstract: The ovules and seeds of most angiosperm groups are enclosed by two integuments, whose evolutionary origins are considerably separated in time, as the inner integument arose over 300 million years ago (MYA) in an ancestor of all living seed plants, while the outer integument arose, perhaps as recently as 164 MYA, in an ancestor of all living angiosperms.

The Rosa genome provides new insights into the domestication of modern roses
Abstract: Roses have high cultural and economic importance as ornamental plants and in the perfume industry. We report the rose whole-genome sequencing and assembly and resequencing of major genotypes that contributed to rose domestication. We generated a homozygous genotype from a heterozygous diploid modern rose progenitor, Rosa chinensis 'Old Blush'.

Evidence for the control of Arabidopsis gynoecium morphogenesis by ETTIN via cell wall dynamics
Abstract: ETTIN is an atypical member of the AUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR family of transcription factors, which plays a crucial role in tissue patterning in the Arabidopsis thaliana gynoecium. Though recent insights have provided valuable information on ETT's interactions with other components of auxin signaling, the biophysical mechanisms linking ETT to its ultimate effects on gynoecium morphology were until now unknown.

Hubble Uncovers the Farthest Star Ever Seen
Through a quirk of nature called "gravitational lensing," a natural lens in space amplified a very distant star's light. Astronomers using Hubble took advantage of this phenomenon to pinpoint the faraway star and set a new distance record for the farthest individual star ever seen. They also used the distant star to test one theory of dark matter, and to probe the make-up of a galaxy cluster.

Humans Changed the Ecosystems of Central Africa More Than 2,600 Years Ago
Fields, streets and cities, but also forests planted in rank and file, and dead straight rivers: humans shape nature to better suit their purposes, and not only since the onset of industrialization. Such influences are well documented in the Amazonian rainforest. On the other hand, the influence of humans was debated in Central Africa where major interventions seem to have occurred there 2,600 years ago: Potsdam geoscientist Yannick Garcin and his team have published a report on their findings in the journal PNAS.

A Universe Aglow
MUSE spectrograph reveals that nearly the entire sky in the early Universe is glowing with Lyman-alpha emission Deep observations made with the MUSE spectrograph on ESO's Very Large Telescope have uncovered vast cosmic reservoirs of atomic hydrogen surrounding distant galaxies. The exquisite sensitivity of MUSE allowed for direct observations of dim clouds of hydrogen glowing with Lyman-alpha emission in the early Universe - revealing that almost the whole night sky is invisibly aglow.

World’s longest sauropod dinosaur trackway brought to light
In 2009, the world's largest dinosaur tracks were discovered in the French village of Plagne, in the Jura Mountains. Since then, a series of excavations at the site has uncovered other tracks, sprawling over more than 150 meters. They form the longest sauropod trackway ever to be found.
